Cost of capturing CO2 drops 67% for next gen carbon capture plant
The International CCS Knowledge Centre report shows a deep capital cost reductions of 67% per tonne of captured CO2. The study showed that compared to the Boundary Dam 3 CCS project (BD3), a CCS system at Shand could see capture capital cost reductions of 67% p er tonne of CO2 captured as well as 92% in potential savings to power plant integration capital cost. Based on the model, the levelized cost of captured CO2 is calculated at $45US/tonne. The Shand CCS Feasibility Study

OGCI Climate Investments announces progression of the UK’s first commercial full-chain CCUS project
OGCI is entering into a strategic partnership with BP, ENI, Equinor, Occidental Petroleum, Shell and Total to progress the Clean Gas Project, the UK’s first commercial full-chain Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) project in Teesside. The Clean Gas Project could form the heart of the Tees Valley CCUS Cluster that will deploy commercially viable, safe, environmentally responsible CCUS at scale. It will combine CO2 capture from new efficient low-carbon power generati

Pressure mounts to bury carbon emissions, but who will pay?
LONDON, Nov 29 (Reuters) - When countries gather on Sunday to hammer out how they will enact pledges to cut carbon emissions, a Norwegian-led oil consortium will offer a solution: pump some of your excess carbon dioxide to us and we could store it for you. Environmentalists worry the costly technology, known as carbon capture and storage (CCS), will perpetuate the fossil fuel status quo when rapid and deep cuts energy use are needed to limit global warming. But proponents of

Scientists renew calls to fast track carbon capture and storage
Scientists from ELEGANCY are holding a conference following their first year of working to fast-track carbon capture and storage in Europe by 2020. Taking place on 8 November in Brussels, the ELEGANCY conference will host speakers from the project who will present initial findings from their first year of operation and announce plans for the second year, in addition to a selection of invited speakers from external stakeholders. The conference is an opportunity to understand t

Oil and gas must embrace carbon capture, MPs warned
Professor Stuart Haszeldine highlighted the “profound social imperative” of pursuing CCS, as he told MPs some 15% of the workforce could be “stranded” without a switch to a low-carbon economy. He also said it would be “impossible” to reach a net zero carbon footprint without it. And he stressed existing oil and gas infrastructure that could be used for CCS was at risk of being decommissioned if the government waits too long to act, thereby increasing the cost of projects. Pro

Why 2018 will be a record year for carbon emissions—and what to do about it
2017 was a record year for renewable energy, but 2018 will be a record year for carbon emissions. Why? And what can be done to decarbonise a world with a raging appetite for energy? In 2018, humanity will pump more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than ever, and yet last year was a record year for renewable energy. What gives? “There is a big disconnect between the [emissions reduction] targets that have been set [to meet the Paris Agreement on climate change], and what is
